It's time once again for the Cross Florida, this year it will take place on April 1, 2012 (Sunday) starting at 7:00am from Alan Shepard Park at the eastern terminus of SR-520 in Cocoa Beach, FL. Be aware this is a month sooner than we have done the ride in years past.
Please be prepared because this won't be like your typical century ride. There will be minimal support with only 4 unmanned SAG stops that will stock an energy drink and water. You will need to depend on convenience stores along the route for most of your food and hydration. Along with your cue sheets and maps we will provide a list of convenience stores located along the route so you can plan your stops accordingly.
Remember this is not a race and will not be timed. The route will be open to traffic and riders must obey all traffic laws. We want to continue a good reputation with residents of the communities we pass through and with the police so please be courteous and above all ride safe.
Personal SAG Vehicle Policy
The Spacecoast Freewheelers are providing roving SAG support for all the riders participating in the Cross Florida. If you choose to have a personal SAG vehicle supporting yourself or a group of riders we insist you have that SAG vehicle registered and also sign and agree to a set of rules.
NO handing out bottles or food on the move.
NO driving slowly ahead, behind or aside of the group, instead please drive ahead and wait.
As SAG drivers please make use of SAG sites and convenience stores to meet up with your riders.
Please consider alternate routes to help alleviate traffic.
If you as the rider have a problem then use your phone and call your SAG vehicle or the SAG support provided by the Spacecoast Freewheelers.
Please download, print and sign this agreement and hand it in during registration. If for whatever reason you cannot accept these rules or break them during the ride we will refuse your participation in this event. Please understand we are doing this to ensure the safety of all the riders participating and by no means want to make your ride more difficult. We think the rules aren't at all burdensome and will make for less traffic around the riders and fewer angry motorists directing their anger towards the riders.
Ride Time and Cutoffs
Due to safety concerns and our finish location being in a public park all riders must complete the ride before sunset. Which on April 1, 2012 in Weeki Wachee Gardens will be at 7:48pm. This will give riders 12.8 hours at a 13.2 mph average to complete the Cross Florida. Our SAG vehicles will be enforcing the following cutoff points and times.
$50 Return Transportation. (we will provide transportation back to Cocoa Beach for you and your bike, yes you don't have to ride your bike back)
$15 per extra t-shirt.
$10 per meal at ride finish for your family and friends.
Your ride will take you 170 miles over quiet back country roads. We will be traveling a route south of the metro Orlando area, then through hilly Pasco county and finishing up at beautiful Linda Pedersen Park on the Gulf coast. Please understand that we have taken great care to keep the route at it's current length yet try to avoid 'hazardous routes' but in some rural areas there are limited choices if any at all. As with any bike event exercise caution when riding public roads. All SAG support will end at 7:48pm, if you are unable to finish before then you must be SAGed to the finish.
Packet pickup and registration will begin at 1:00pm until 5:00pm on Saturday (March 31) at the Doubletree Hotel in Cocoa Beach. Packet pickup will begin again on Sunday (April 1) at 6:00am in Alan Shepard Park; located at 211 E Cocoa Beach Cswy in Cocoa Beach. There will be NO 'day of' registration at this event. We will be starting promptly at 7:00am, which is approximately the first twilight in the morning.
Meet fellow riders after the ride to recount your journey at the catered BBQ meal held in Linda Pedersen Park. Massage will also available after the event.
Our club is non-profit and supports various charities with the proceeds from events like this.
